The European Commission asked major social platforms such as TikTok and Facebook to clearly label political ads and prevent content that threatens the integrity of European elections from going viral.

In the run-up to the European elections taking place on June 6-9, the European Union asked Facebook, TikTok and other social media platforms to commit and intervene to prevent the spread of fake content through artificial intelligence.

European parliamentarians approved earlier this month the Law on Digital Markets, which among other things deals with the issue of content generated through artificial intelligence on major social media platforms.

The law identifies 22 social media platforms, including Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube and platform X, formerly Twitter, which are considered "very large" platforms. The provisions of the law will come into force in several stages. Violators of the law may be fined as early as this year. The European Commission also published guidelines for major social media platforms because Brussels is concerned about the impact of Russian "manipulation" and "disinformation" on European elections.

With these guidelines we are making full use of all the tools provided by the Digital Services Law to ensure that platforms fulfill their obligations and are not misused to manipulate our elections, while also preserving freedom of expression, said Commissioner Thierry Breton.

BE: AI-generated content must be tagged

The EU Commission requires major social media platforms to "mitigate specific risks related to artificial intelligence, for example by clearly labeling AI-generated content (such as deepfakes").

The EU Commission recommended that major social media platforms promote official election information and "reduce the monetization and virality of content that threatens the integrity of electoral processes" to reduce any risks. The EU Commission also announced that political ads "must be clearly labeled as such". In 2025, a stricter law regarding political advertisements is expected to enter into force. The Commission called on the platforms to create mechanisms "to reduce the impact of incidents that could have a significant effect on the outcome or participation in European elections."/ DW
