North Korea censors the "BBC" program / Cause of the pants of the

North Korea's state-run TV channel has censored a BBC gardening program over presenter Alan Titchmarsh's trousers.

Central TV aired a 2010 edition of Alan Titchmarsh's Garden Secrets, but made sure viewers couldn't see his jeans.

Jeans are seen as a symbol of Western imperialism and as such are banned.

Titchmarsh said his jeans were not too tight, but they were clearly not acceptable in North Korea.

He said: "I have never seen myself as a dangerous subversive imperialist; I am generally regarded as comfortable and quite harmless."

North Korea's rules banning jeans have been in place since the 1990s.

At the time, leader Kim Jong-il declared that denim pants were a symbol of Western and especially American imperialism, which had no place in a socialist state, according to Seoul-based NK Nea.

Current leader Kim Jong-un, himself a fan of voluminous legwear, is said to be irritated by the tight jeans and T-shirts bearing Western logos that are popular in South Korea.

How did North Korea get a BBC programme?

Western programs are extremely rare on North Korean screens, as the regime is wary, to the point of paranoia, of allowing foreign culture into the country.

However, it is not the first time Garden Secrets has been previously aired on Central TV, with Mr Titchmarsh saying he was "surprised" to be shown on the communist state's screens.

But it's still not entirely clear how it got to North Korea in the first place./ CNA
