Ukraine: Russia may have used a new type of bomb in the attacks on Kharkiv

Russia may have used a new type of bomb during airstrikes in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, where at least one person was killed a day earlier, local officials said.

Officials said at least four children, including a three-month-old baby, were among 19 people injured in Kharkiv in the latest attacks in Russia's invasion of Ukraine since February 2022.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack as "Russian terror", and Volodymyr Tymoshko, the head of regional police in Kharkiv, said Moscow may have used a new type of "smart bomb", which he said were of the UMPB D-30 type.

He said that such bombs recently. "Smart bombs" are bombs that guide themselves to the target after the pilot selects the target before launching them, enabling the pilot to leave the target area.

Even the regional governor, Oleh Synehubov, suggested that Moscow may have used a new type of bomb, stressing that "it seems the Russians decided to test their modified bombs against residents and against houses."

Russia did not immediately comment on these statements. Moscow denies that it targets civilians even though the war in Ukraine has killed thousands, displaced millions and destroyed cities and towns.

In recent weeks, the Russians have intensified airstrikes against Ukraine, targeting key infrastructure, including power stations, in retaliation for bombings in Russian border regions.
