US Vice President JD Vance is embarking on a diplomatic visit to Armenia and Azerbaijan this week, part of a broader US effort to support peace and strategic cooperation in the South Caucasus. His visit began after attending the Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy.

The trip lasts from February 9 to 11, 2026 and is accompanied by the Undersecretary of State for Economic Affairs, Jacob Helberg.

The visit aims to promote peace efforts and advance a US-backed initiative known as the Trump Initiative for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), a strategic corridor project designed to improve trade and transit connectivity in the region.

The trip underscores U.S. support for an agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan that was brokered last year in Washington and is seen as an initial step toward a lasting peace after decades of conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The initiative combines diplomacy and infrastructure planning to help strengthen peace and economic cooperation between the two neighbors after years of hostilities.

The Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh lasted for decades, with two full-scale wars before Baku regained control of the region in 2023. /CNA
