A senior official of the Palestinian Hamas organization, Khaled Meshaal, said today that Hamas will not surrender its weapons and will not accept foreign rule in the Gaza Strip, despite pressure from the US and Israel to disarm.

Meshaal said that the threat of criminalizing the "resistance" and its weapons is unacceptable and that weapons are an essential part of resistance against Israel for Palestinians under occupation.

"As long as there is occupation, there will be resistance," he said, emphasizing that this is the right of peoples under occupation and a source of national pride.

He also spoke out against any form of "foreign rule" in Gaza and stressed that Palestinians should be governed by Palestinians.

The US-brokered peace plan envisages a second phase of a ceasefire in Gaza, which includes the disarmament of Hamas and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces. But Hamas has made clear that disarmament is a “red line” it will not accept.

According to Israeli officials, Hamas still has about 20,000 fighters and tens of thousands of weapons inside Gaza./ CNA
