Elections in Japan/ Huge victory for 'Iron Lady' Sanae Takaichi

Sanae Takaichi, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party in Japan, appears to have secured a resounding victory in the extraordinary House of Representatives elections, as she took a large majority of seats in parliament, around 316 out of 465 seats.

Takaichi's coalition has achieved nearly two-thirds of the seats in the Lower House, which gives it the power to introduce legislation even without major obstacles in the Upper House.

Takaichi, 64, is considered an ultraconservative, supporting strict policies on national security, immigration and the economy, and has taken strong positions on defense against China, even suggesting the possibility of intervention in the event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan.

After the announcement of the result, the US Treasury Secretary described Takaichi as a strong ally, underlining the strategic ties between the US and Japan. /CNA
