Clashes between police and protesters in Milan during the Winter Olympics

Thousands of people took to the streets of Milan on Saturday, the first full day of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, as demonstrations were organized against the economic, social and environmental impact of this sporting event.

A group of about 100 protesters clashed with police after the large march, throwing fireworks, smoke bombs, and attacking law enforcement with hard objects.

In response to the situation, the police used water to disperse the crowd and tear gas against the most violent groups, avoiding harsher interventions that could endanger the rest of the demonstrators.

Protesters argued that the Olympic Games have often become unsustainable, with large infrastructure investments that harm nature, an event that has brought high prices and urban inequality, harming local residents.

The protests included banners with messages such as "The Games are unsustainable," while some demonstrators also focused on concerns about the cutting down of trees for the construction of tracks and infrastructure. /CNA
