Largest quantity ever seized/ 30 tons of narcotics seized in North Macedonia

North Macedonian police have seized over 30 tons of narcotics, marijuana, during an operation conducted in Skopje and Strumica, in what is considered the largest quantity ever confiscated in a single operation.

According to authorities, the narcotic substance was legally cultivated for medical purposes, but it is suspected that it was destined to be illegally diverted to the black market, both domestically and abroad.

The investigations are focused on a cannabis cultivation company with Serbian interests, headquartered in Skopje, which is also suspected of being linked to the seizure of five tons of cannabis by Serbian police on January 30, 2026. In this case, Serbian authorities have arrested three people, while investigations continue.

The Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Hristijan Mickoski, stated that further discoveries are expected and that dozens of tons of cannabis are still in storage, destined for the black market.

In North Macedonia, since 2017, dozens of companies have been licensed to cultivate medical cannabis, but authorities admit that controlling this sector remains a serious challenge. /CNA
