Attack on a mosque in Pakistan / At least 31 people lost their lives

In one of the deadliest attacks in recent years, a suicide bomber killed at least 31 people at a Shiite mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan, as worshippers were attending Friday prayers.

Officials said on February 6 that the attack injured about 170 worshippers in Tarlai, on the outskirts of Islamabad. Mosques across the Muslim world are packed with worshippers during Friday prayers.

According to videos released immediately after the attack, bodies of people were seen lying around the mosque compound. Dozens of injured people were also seen lying in the courtyard of the Khadija Tul Kubra Imambargah mosque.

"In total, 31 people have lost their lives. The number of injured who have been taken to hospitals has reached 169," said Irfan Memon, a senior state official.

Aun Shah, an eyewitness, said two attackers initially shot and killed the mosque's security guards. He said worshippers tried to stop them by running towards them.

"As soon as [the attackers] reached the door of the mosque, one of them detonated the explosive," he told Radio Free Europe's Radio Mashaal.

Some believers then protested outside the mosque. They said the government is incapable of preventing the increasing terrorist attacks.

Attacks in Islamabad are rare, as security forces are beefed up there. But the northwestern provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and southwestern Balochistan are increasingly hit by Islamist violence and nationalist insurgencies, where the Pakistani Taliban and secular ethnic Baloch separatists clash with Pakistani security forces.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but conflict monitor ACLED said the attack bore a resemblance to attacks carried out by the Islamic State terrorist group. The group said the February 6 attack was the deadliest in Islamabad in a decade.

Pakistan, with a population of 240 million, has a majority Sunni Muslim population, with Shia Muslims making up 15 percent of the population. Since the 1980s, thousands have been killed in sectarian violence, and Shiites have often been targeted by Sunni extremists. /REL
