Signal of support for the island/ France and Canada open consulates in Greenland

France and Canada have opened consulates in Greenland, in a development seen as a clear sign of the political and diplomatic support that NATO allies are offering to the Arctic island at a time of geopolitical tension.

Canada officially inaugurated its consulate in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. The opening ceremony was attended by the Governor General of Canada, Mary Simon, and Foreign Minister, Anita Anand.

Also today, France inaugurated its consulate in Greenland, further expanding its diplomatic presence on the island. Until now, only the United States and Iceland had consulates in Nuuk.

These diplomatic steps come after statements by US President Donald Trump, who had earlier suggested that the United States should take control of Greenland for national security reasons, statements that caused strong reactions in Europe and beyond.

Later, Trump softened his stance, saying he was considering the possibility of a deal after talks with Denmark, European allies and Canada.

Canadian authorities emphasize that the opening of the consulate is not an immediate reaction to the current situation, as the decision was announced in early 2024, as part of Ottawa's review of its Arctic foreign policy. The consulate was scheduled to open in late 2025, but the inauguration was postponed due to adverse weather conditions.

Experts believe the increased diplomatic presence reflects Greenland's strategic importance and the strong historical ties between Inuit communities in the region. /CNA
