Army helicopter crashes, 2 crew members killed in South Korea

A South Korean military AH-1S Cobra attack helicopter has crashed during a training flight in the northern county of Gapyeong, killing both crew members on board. 

The helicopter crashed on Monday morning for reasons that remain unclear.

The two service members were rushed to nearby hospitals but later died from their injuries. In response, the military suspended operations of all AH-1S helicopters and formed an emergency response team to investigate the cause of the crash.

The military said the training included practicing emergency landing procedures while keeping the engine running, a maneuver designed to prepare crews for combat or mechanical emergencies.

Gapyeong is located northeast of Seoul and not far from the heavily fortified border with North Korea. The incident adds to growing scrutiny over the security of the military exercise, as South Korea maintains a high level of alert amid regional tensions.
