"We don't have enough for new challenges"/ NATO Secretary: We need to increase spending

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte urged alliance member states on Monday to increase defense spending beyond their shared target of 2% of national output set a decade ago, saying that was now too low due to new challenges.

Rutte spoke in Lisbon alongside Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, who reiterated his country's commitment to meet the 2% target by 2029. In 2023, Portugal spent 1.5% of its gross domestic product (GDP) on its NATO commitments.

"We know that the 2% target, set a decade ago, will not be enough to meet the challenges of tomorrow. This means we must spend more on our defense now."

NATO allies will discuss whether to raise the current 2% target at a summit in The Hague this summer, amid pressure from US President Donald Trump for NATO allies to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP - a target that no NATO member currently meets. /CNA
