US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he would impose measures against Colombia, including tariffs, sanctions and travel bans, in retaliation for the South American country refusing to accept two US military planes carrying migrants being deported as part of a crackdown on illegal immigration.

President Trump said that Colombian President Gustavo Petro's action endangered the national security of the United States and he has instructed the US administration to take measures in response.

They include imposing emergency tariffs of 25 percent on all goods entering the United States, which will rise to 50 percent within a week; a travel ban and visa waiver for Colombian government officials and its allies; emergency banking and financial sanctions, and expanded border controls on Colombian citizens.

"These measures are just the beginning," Mr. Trump wrote on the Truth Social network. "We will not allow the Colombian government to violate its legal obligations regarding the acceptance and return of criminals they sent to the United States!"

Colombia's refusal to accept the flights is the second case of a Latin American country refusing requests to expel the US military.

"The United States cannot treat Colombian immigrants as criminals," Petro wrote, noting that there were 15,660 Americans without proper immigration status in Colombia. /VOA
