Hungarian Prime Minister Orban: Conditions for Ukraine and the EU

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is demanding that Ukraine open pipelines for Russian gas to Eastern Europe as a condition for approving a planned extension of EU sanctions against Russia.

Hungary has made it a condition for approving the extension of EU sanctions against Russia that Kiev reopen a gas pipeline it closed at the beginning of the year. This pipeline used to transport natural gas from Russia to other Central European countries, including Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Hungarian state radio and television.

The planned extension of EU sanctions against Russia is on the agenda in Brussels on Monday (27.01.), because, if not extended, the current EU sanctions against Russia end on 31 January.

Orbán said that he had "pulled the handbrake" on this issue, because in the last three years Hungary has lost 19 billion euros due to existing sanctions against Russia.

Hungarian Prime Minister Orban's harsh criticism of the interruption of natural gas supplies from Russia due to the closure of the gas pipeline that passes through Ukrainian territory has been joined by his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico.

Additional conditions towards Ukraine

Orbán also mentioned two other conditions for saying "yes" to the extension of sanctions against Russia: Ukraine must stop military attacks on the alternative route through which Hungary currently receives gas from Russia. This is the Turkish gas pipeline, which runs through the Balkans. There have been Ukrainian attacks on this pipeline at the border point on Russian territory.

Third, he sought guarantees that Ukraine would not block the passage of oil from Russia, which, like gas, comes to Hungary through the Druzhba pipeline, whose pipelines also pass through Ukrainian territory.

Hungary covers more than 80 percent of its gas and oil needs from Russia.

The formal decision to extend EU sanctions must be taken unanimously by the Council of the European Union. Until now, the EU summit has usually given the mandate for such an extension. Under the current rules, sanctions are to be renewed every six months./  DW
