Hamas releases four Israeli soldiers in exchange for 200 prisoners

The Palestinian militant group Hamas on Saturday released four female Israeli soldiers it had been holding hostage since October 2023 in exchange for 200 Palestinian prisoners, in line with the agreement that ended about 15 months of fighting in Gaza.

The four Israeli hostages were transported in Red Cross vehicles to Israeli forces.

Shortly after, buses carrying Palestinian prisoners were seen leaving the Israeli military prison of Ofer in the occupied West Bank. The Israel Prison Service said 200 people had been released.

The developments were welcomed by Israelis gathered in Tel Aviv and Palestinians gathered in Ramallah. This is the second exchange under the ceasefire agreement, after the first took place on January 19.

The agreement stipulates that Hamas will release 33 women, children, the elderly, sick or injured hostages during an initial six-week phase, while Israel will release in exchange 30 prisoners for every civilian released and 50 for every soldier.

The four Israeli soldiers released on Saturday - Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa, Naama Levy and Liri Albag - were taken hostage on October 7, 2023, while at a military observation post near Gaza. The terrorist attack by the Hamas militant group inside Israeli territory was the trigger for the start of the war in Gaza./VOA
