US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced plans to visit Panama and other countries in Central America amid President Donald Trump's efforts to reclaim the Panama Canal and curb illegal immigration.

State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce confirmed that Secretary Rubio will travel to Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic starting late next week. The trip is expected to mark Mr. Rubio's first overseas visit as Secretary of State.

The State Department said Rubio is prioritizing American engagement within the Western Hemisphere.

A State Department spokesperson told VOA that "engaging with our neighbors is a vital element in addressing the issues of immigration, supply chains, and economic growth, which are key to Secretary Rubio's efforts to implement policies to strengthen America, its prosperity, and its security."

President Trump has said he cannot rule out the possibility of military or economic measures to achieve his goal of returning the Panama Canal to United States control.

Earlier this week, Secretary Rubio outlined his foreign policy priorities, including stopping the mass entry of undocumented immigrants into the United States.

“The State Department will no longer take any action that facilitates or encourages mass immigration ,” Secretary Rubio said in a statement.  “Our diplomatic relations with other countries, particularly in the Western Hemisphere, will prioritize securing America’s borders, stopping illegal and destabilizing immigration, and negotiating the repatriation of illegal immigrants”  to their countries. /VOA
