Zelenskiy: Peace negotiations without impact if Ukraine is not included

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy told reporters on Saturday that he hopes Europe and the United States will be involved in talks to end his country's war with Russia.

In a joint press conference with the President of neighboring Moldova, Maia Sandu, Mr. Zelenskiy said that in order for the negotiations to have a significant impact, Ukraine must be included in any discussions that may be held to end the war.

"Regarding the format of the talks: I really hope that Ukraine will be present, America, Europe and Russia," said Mr. Zelenskiy, explaining that a framework has not yet been created.

"Yes, I would very much like Europe to participate, because we will be members of the European Union," he said.

Mr. Zelenskiy said he thinks the new President of the United States, Donald Trump, could end the war, but he could only do so if Ukraine is included in the talks.

"Otherwise it won't work. Because Russia doesn't want to end the war, while Ukraine wants to end it," he said.

President Trump promised during the campaign that he would end the war within 24 hours of taking office, but his aides have since said that reaching a deal could take months.

The US president has expressed his willingness to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin about ending the war.

On Friday, President Putin said he would like to meet with President Trump to talk about Ukraine. He cited a 2022 decree by Ukrainian President Zelenskiy that banned talks with Russia as an obstacle to negotiations.

At the press conference, Mr. Zelenskiy said he took the measure to deny Mr. Putin the opportunity to establish other channels of communication with interlocutors in Ukraine. Mr. Zelenskiy said Russia was actively trying to do this before he signed the order./Voa
