Netanyahu: Israel can stand alone if US stops arms shipments

Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel can go it alone after the US warned it could freeze arms shipments if a full occupation of Rafah in Gaza is ordered.

"If we have to, we'll stand alone. I've said that if we have to, we'll fight tooth and nail," he said.

US President Joe Biden said he would freeze some weapons, including artillery shells, if Rafah was captured.

The United States has already halted a shipment of bombs for fear of civilian deaths.

However, Netanyahu on Thursday recalled the 1948 war to dismiss warnings from the US, Israel's closest ally.

"In the War of Independence 76 years ago, we were the few against the many," he said.

 "We had no weapons. There was an arms embargo on Israel, but with great strength of spirit, heroism and unity among us, we won."

Yoav Gallant, Israel's defense minister, meanwhile said that Israel's enemies as well as its best friends must understand that the country cannot be subdued.

"We will stay strong, we will achieve our goals."

The comments came hours after the UN said more than 80,000 people had fled Rafah since Monday amid continued shelling and as Israeli tanks massed near built-up areas.

The UN also warned that food and fuel were running out for more than a million still sheltering in the city because they were not receiving aid through nearby crossings.

Israeli troops seized control and closed the Rafah crossing with Egypt at the start of their operation, while the UN said it was too dangerous for its staff and trucks to reach the reopened Kerem Shalom crossing with Israel./ CNA
