Russia: Extreme danger if NATO moves troops to Ukraine

Russia said sending NATO troops to Ukraine would potentially pose a great risk, adding that Moscow is closely monitoring a Ukrainian petition for such intervention.

The petition, published on the Ukrainian president's website, says Ukraine should ask the United States, Britain and other countries to send troops to help Kiev repel the Russian invasion.

"The Kiev regime is very unpredictable," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said when asked about the issue during a May 8 press conference.

"We have repeatedly said that a direct intervention on the ground in this conflict by the armies of NATO countries carries a great potential risk. Therefore, we consider this as a great provocation and of course we are watching the situation very carefully", he added.

It is unclear whether the petition will garner the necessary votes – 25,000 – required for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to approve or reject it. By the morning of May 8, 1,594 people have signed this petition.

NATO has supported Ukraine in the war, providing it with powerful weapons, including tanks and long-range missiles, but has not directly intervened with troops, something US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin have warned against. that it would lead to a Third World War.

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has said that sending Western troops to Ukraine "would be legitimate" if Russia crossed the Ukrainian front lines and if Kiev requested such a thing.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on May 8 that Russia would target French troops if they were sent to Ukraine, which is facing an invasion that Moscow launched in 2022./ REL
