Freedom House is declared an "undesirable organization" by Russia

Russia has declared the human rights group, Freedom House, an "undesirable organization" on Tuesday.

Freedom House, based in Washington, was founded in 1941 and is known for political advocacy on issues of democracy, political rights and human liberties.

In its 2024 report, Freedom House described Russia as an "unsafe" country, rating it with only 13 points out of a possible 100 for Global Freedom.

The "undesirable organization" law, passed in 2015, targets non-governmental organizations that are funded from abroad.

Russian officials have used this law to marginalize dozens of foreign organizations in Russia.

In February, Russia declared Radio Free Europe (REL) an "undesirable organization".

According to the register, REL is the 142nd entity to be included in the list.

Inclusion in the list means that an organization cannot operate in Russia, and citizens of Russia are prohibited from cooperating with it, because otherwise they risk criminal prosecution./ REL
