Biden: I will not supply Israel with weapons to hit the city of Rafah
Joe Biden

President Joe Biden said Wednesday that he would not supply Israel with assault weapons that it could use to launch an attack on Rafah, Hamas's last major base in Gaza. The American president has expressed concern for the safety of more than 1 million civilians sheltered there.

In an interview with the CNN network, President Biden said that the United States remains committed to the defense of Israel and would supply that country with defense missiles and other defensive weapons, but if Israel attacks the city of Rafah, "we will not we will supply him with the weapons and shells he uses there".

The United States has historically provided Israel with major military aid. This assistance was urgently requested following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel that left 1,200 dead. Militants took about 250 civilians hostage.

President Biden's comments and his decision last week to halt a shipment of high-powered bombs to Israel show growing disagreements between his administration and the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. President Biden has said that Israel must do much more to protect the lives of civilians in Gaza.

President Biden told CNN that if American bombs were to be used in the city of Rafah, he would not supply Israel.

"I made it clear that if they go into Rafah - they haven't gone into Rafah yet - if they go into Rafah, I will not supply them with the weapons that are used for such situations," Mr. Biden said.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed the postponement of the arms shipment earlier Wednesday during a US Senate hearing.

President Biden sent an order to the Pentagon last week asking for a pause in the delivery of heavy weapons, according to officials who were not authorized to speak on the matter./ VOA
