Scary forecast/ Global temperatures will rise to at least 2.5 degrees

The world's leading climate scientists expect global temperatures to rise by at least 2.5 degrees Celsius this century, smashing past targets and causing catastrophic consequences for humanity and the planet, an exclusive poll by  The Guardian has revealed.

In the conducted survey, where 80% of respondents are part of the authoritative Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, they predict at least 2.5 degrees Celsius of global warming above pre-industrial levels.

Only 6% of respondents thought that the internationally agreed limit for an increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius would be met. 

Scientists predict that we will be heading for a "semi-dystopian" future, one of conflict and mass migration, fueled by heat waves, fires, floods and storms of far greater intensity than those that have already hit.

The Guardian reached out to every contactable lead author or review editor of IPCC reports since 2018.

Almost half responded, 380 out of 843. IPCC reports are the gold standard assessments of climate change, endorsed by all governments and produced by experts in the physical and social sciences. The results show that many of the most knowledgeable people on the planet expect climate devastation to unfold in the coming decades./ CNA
