UN: About 80,000 people fled the city of Rafah

About 80,000 people have fled the Gaza city of Rafah since Monday, the United Nations Palestine Refugee Agency (UNRWA) said.

"People are facing another forced displacement in the Gaza Strip. Nowhere is safe. We need a ceasefire now," UNRWA wrote on Platform X.

Until now, more than a million displaced Palestinians - half of them children - were sheltering in Rafah.

But on Monday, the Israeli army asked those sheltering in the eastern parts of Rafah to leave for an "expanded humanitarian zone", where it said they would find field hospitals, tents and other supplies.

Israel has already begun bombing the city, where it believes there are thousands of fighters from the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, designated a terrorist organization by the US and other powers.

This group attacked Israel in October last year, killing over 1,200 people.

Israel's retaliatory offensive in Gaza, which is still ongoing, has killed nearly 35,000 people, according to authorities in the enclave.

Israel's military says victory against Hamas is impossible without taking control of the city of Rafah.

But US officials warn that the operation in the city - where the population has been augmented by refugees from other parts of Gaza - could lead to large numbers of civilian casualties.

The US President, Joe Biden, said that the US will stop supplying Israel with some weapons if it launches a major ground operation in Rafah./ REL
