Zelensky: Ukraine needs more weapons
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his country could stop Russian forces from advancing in the east if allies increased arms supplies.

He made these comments at a press conference in Kiev, together with the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola.

Russia has made small but steady territorial gains in eastern Ukraine since the beginning of this year.

"We are putting maximum pressure on our partners to increase arms shipments," Zelensky said.

"If they increase, we will be able to stop [Russian forces] in the east," he added.

In late April, Ukrainian troops withdrew from three eastern villages, and military leaders said the situation on the frontline has worsened.

The US decision last month to approve a military aid bill for Ukraine worth more than $60 billion was welcomed by Kiev.

However, many military units are reported to have yet to receive new weapons.

Zelensky said increased domestic production of drones and artillery shells has helped Ukraine in its battle against ongoing Russian attacks.

But he acknowledged Ukraine's need for more troops, saying the troop shortage was creating a "difficult situation" near Avdivka - a town that has already fallen under Russian control - and Pokrovsk, which is still in the hands of Ukraine.

Russia has launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Since then, the West has continuously helped it with weapons, while it has adopted several rounds of sanctions against Russia./ REL
