Aga Khan, spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims worldwide, passes away

The spiritual leader of the world's Ismaili Muslims, Aga Khan, has passed away at the age of 88.

Khan, who became the youngest spiritual leader of millions of believers in the world at the age of 20, passed away at his family home in Portugal.

He began his leadership career while a student at Harvard and spent the wealth of a family material empire built over billions of dollars on building homes, hospitals, and schools in developing countries.

Khan was born on December 13, 1936, in Creux-de-Genthod, near Geneva, Switzerland, the son of Joan Yarde-Buller and Aly Khan, and spent part of his childhood in Nairobi, Kenya.

He became known as a horse breeder and owner and represented Iran in the 1964 Winter Olympics as a skier. His ideas about building and design led him to establish an architecture prize and programs for Islamic Architecture at MIT and Harvard. He restored ancient Islamic structures around the world.

The Aga Khan lived in France and in recent years was based in Portugal. His development network and foundation are based in Switzerland. /CNA
