US Postal Service suspends incoming packages from China, Hong Kong

The U.S. Postal Service will temporarily suspend packages from China and Hong Kong after President Donald Trump ended a trade provision this week used by retailers including Temu and Shein to send low-value packages duty-free to the U.S.

The Trump administration imposed an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods that took effect on Tuesday and moved to close the "de minimis" exemption that allows American importers and buyers to avoid paying tariffs on packages worth less than $800.

The additional tariffs and elimination of de minimis pricing follow repeated warnings from Trump that Beijing was not doing enough to stop the distribution of fentanyl, a dangerous synthetic opioid, in the US.

Reuters previously reported that Chinese suppliers are using the duty-free provision to export chemical materials for fentanyl by disguising them as equipment and other low-cost goods./ CNA
