Political parties in Kosovo are continuing their campaign for the February 9 parliamentary elections, amid debates about inherited problems and deep divisions over many issues related to domestic and foreign policies.

Analysts say that this time the country's next government will face much more difficult challenges in a much more unpredictable world.

Engjëllushe Morina from the European Council on Foreign Relations tells Voice of America that the recent elections in Europe and America have changed the geostrategic context in many aspects and for this reason, Kosovo faces major challenges in the coming years.

"So, I believe that any government that emerges from Sunday's elections will have to have a special focus, especially on Kosovo's position in the Balkan region, as well as on Kosovo's position in its Euro-Atlantic integrations, although these integrations are currently being questioned due to the new government in the United States of America, whose president insists on reducing US influence in Europe, especially in the security sphere. This means that all of these present major challenges that Kosovo really needs to be prepared to face," she said.

Besar Gërgi from the Group for Legal and Political Studies says that whoever will establish the government after February 9th must change the current foreign policy path or work towards a better explanation of the realities on the ground.

"Any incoming government will have to choose one of these two, either to continue with a policy as lenient as possible regarding our northern neighbor or to invest more in diplomacy and communication with allies so that there is no room for misunderstandings," said Mr. Gërgi.

Since June 2023, Kosovo has been under punitive measures from the European Union due to its actions in the Serb-majority north. Even senior American officials from the administration of former President Joe Biden had warned on several occasions of a deterioration in relations between the two countries due to the uncoordinated actions of the Kosovo government.

Representatives of the opposition parties in Kosovo say that since the declaration of independence, the country has never been in a more unfavorable position with its international partners. Part of their program is also repairing and deepening relations with the United States, which they say is essential for Kosovo's future.

"Kosovo, an independent and sovereign state, a member of NATO and the European Union, with permanent friendship with the United States of America, continues to be the political mission even today," said the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku.

“Do ta forcojmë aleancën me Shtetet e Bashkuara të Amerikës dhe vendet e Bashkimit Evropian dhe të gjitha vendet demokratike të botës”, tha kryetari i Partisë Demokratike të Kosovës, Bedri Hamza.

“Duhet me heq mashtruesin sepse duam siguri, siguri të plotë dhe duam siguri të përjetshme. Duam anëtarësim në NATO dhe duam anëtarësim me planin nacional. Duam miqësi me Amerikën prandaj duhet me heq mashtruesin”, tha kryetari i Aleancës për Ardhmërinë e Kosovës, Ramush Haradinaj.

Kandidati i lëvizjes Vetëvendosje për kryeministër Albin Kurti, që mban aktualisht këtë post, gjatë shpalosjes së zotimeve të tij tha se do të forcojë edhe më tej marrëdhëniet strategjike të vendit me partnerët ndërkombëtarë.

Por, gjatë një tubimi në Mitrovicë, zoti Kurti tha se nuk do të themelojë Asociacionin e komunave serbe, një kërkesë kjo e vazhdueshme e diplomatëve perëndimorë.

“Republika e Kosovës me qeverinë tonë në udhëheqje i thotë jo kurrë ‘Zajednicës’ dhe po Asociacionit të komunave të Kosovës, ku tash e kemi edhe komunën veriore të Mitrovicës sonë të dashur”, tha zoti Kurti.

I dërguari i posaçëm i Presidentit Donald Trump për misione të veçanta, Richard Grenell, tha se qeveria e udhëhequr nga Albin Kurti nuk është e besueshme. Në një postim në rrjetet sociale ai tha se “retorika e përdorur nga (Albin) Kurti tani, duke pretenduar se është i afërt me SHBA-në dhe më mirë se të gjitha qeveritë e tjera të Kosovës, është absolutisht e rreme. Mos u mashtroni” shkroi ai.

Zëri i Amerikës i kërkoi zyrës së Kryeministrit Kurti një koment për deklaratat e zotit Grenell, por deri në përgatitjen e këtij materiali nuk mori përgjigje.

“Kjo deklaratë ishte mjaft e pazakonshme sa i përket një zyrtari të lartë amerikan në një periudhë para zgjedhore, mund të jetë ndoshta edhe një kërkesë për t’u bërë aktorë në zgjedhjet në Kosovë por se duhet të jetë mjaft shqetësuese për vendin tonë duke pasur parasysh se zoti (Richard) Grenell është tani më zyrtarisht i emëruar nga presidenti Trump si zyrtar i qeverisë amerikane pra si zyrtar i posaçëm për misione të veçanta”, tha Besar Gërgi nga Grupi për Studime Juridike dhe Politike.

“Shpresoj që dikush në administratën e presidentit Trump e kupton rëndësinë që ka Ballkani, rëndësinë gjeopolitike për Evropën, për marrëdhëniet euroatlantike dhe kësi komente të ruhen për ndonjë ditë tjetër. Më mirë kishte qenë që të kemi komente zyrtare prej Shteteve të Bashkuara, mënyra më e mirë kishte qenë që të vijnë pas zgjedhjeve në Kosovë”, tha Engjëllushe Morina nga Këshilli Evropian për Marrëdhënie Ndërkombëtare.

Zoti Grenell edhe gjatë mandatit të parë të tij si i dërguar i presidentit Donald Trump për bisedimet e paqes Kosovë – Serbi, kishte kritikuar zotin Kurti.

Mr. Grenell is known as the author of the agreement to normalize economic relations between Kosovo and Serbia that was reached at the White House in September 2020. In the spring of that year, Mr. Kurti said that Mr. Grenell was involved in the overthrow of his government on March 25, due to disagreements about the Kosovo-Serbia negotiation process, but this has been denied by the American diplomat. /VOA
