3 former KLA leaders sentenced to prison/ The Hague Court issues verdict

The Hague Tribunal has sentenced 3 former KLA leaders to prison.

The Specialist Chambers based in The Hague have found Haxhi Shala, Sabit Januzim and Ismet Bahtijarim guilty and sentenced them.

They have been convicted on charges related to 'obstruction of justice'.

Shala was sentenced to three years in prison, while Bahtijari and Januzi were sentenced to two years in prison. The time spent in pre-trial detention, according to the trial panel, will be counted towards their sentences.

"With regard to the time calculated in detention, the panel notes that Mr. Januzi and Bahtijari were arrested on October 5, 2023 and both were detained in the detention facilities of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers on October 6, 2023. The panel deducts the time of detention from October 5, 2023. With regard to Mr. Shala, the panel notes that he was arrested on December 11, 2023 and has been detained in the detention facilities of the Specialist Chambers since December 12, 2023. Consequently, it deducts the time of detention from December 11, 2023," the judge said as she read the panel's decision.

During the hearing, the three defendants stated that they have agreed to pay a total of 500 euros in compensation to the victim in this case, identified only as "victim 01". According to the agreement, Shala will pay 400 euros, Januzi 100 euros, while Bahtijari will not pay any compensation. This amount must be paid to the victim by February 19.

Shala, Januzi and Bahtijari had pleaded guilty to witness intimidation and obstruction of justice, after reaching a plea agreement with the Specialized Prosecution Office in late December 2024. /CNA
