Floods in Australia / Evacuations begin for thousands of residents

Deadly floods caused by record rainfall have swept across northeastern Australia.

More than 400 people, mostly in Townsville, Ingham and Cardwell, are in evacuation shelters after being advised to leave on Sunday.

Authorities warned communities hit by the floods to prepare for further destruction.

Entire towns have lost power and been cut off by flooding. The Bruce Highway, the only link between central, northern and far northern Queensland, could be impassable for a significant period after a bridge was washed out at Ollera Creek, between Townsville and Ingham.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the low-pressure system that has brought torrential rain over the past week has begun to weaken. There is now a "continuing threat of life-threatening river and flash flooding".

Located in the tropics, the northern region is vulnerable to destructive cyclones, storms, and floods.

But climate scientists have warned that warmer oceans and a hotter planet are creating the conditions for more intense and frequent extreme rainfall events. / CNA
