Earthquake fears in Santorini / 5 thousand residents evacuate the island

Residents of Santorini faced another difficult night as the risk and anxiety of another earthquake remain high. This relentless wave of seismic activity continues to shake the island.

Over the past three days, 550 earthquakes have been recorded in the sea between Santorini, Amorgos and Ios, with 36 tremors during the night alone.

Despite the reassurances from seismologists, fear has driven thousands of residents to flee Santorini. In the last 24 hours alone, 2,000 people have arrived in Athens, bringing the total number of those who have fled to over 5,000.

The Greek Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization has warned that intense seismic activity could continue for weeks. The head of the organization said that an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2-5.3 could change the seismic pressure, reducing the risk of a much stronger event. While an earthquake above 6.0 remains unlikely, experts continue to monitor the situation closely. /CNA
