Trump meets with Netanyahu at the White House

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will become the first foreign leader to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House in his second term on Tuesday, at a critical moment for the Gaza ceasefire.

Upon his arrival in Washington, Israeli Ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter, who took up his post a week ago, described this as "a historic visit" to X. "The US-Israel friendship is strong and is getting stronger," he added.

Trump has taken credit for signing the initial six-week ceasefire deal that halted the 15-month war between Israel and Hamas. So far, it has led to the release of 13 Israeli and five Thai hostages and the release of 583 Palestinian prisoners in exchange.

However, Netanyahu, facing a fight for his political survival, has repeatedly stated that the existing Gaza agreement is for a temporary ceasefire and that Israel has reserved the "right to return to fighting" against Hamas, saying this would have US support.
