Trump signs order/US withdraws from UN Council, halts funding for UNRWA and

U.S. President Donald J. Trump has signed an Executive Order withdrawing the United States from the UN Human Rights Council.

He has also signed an order to halt all further funding for both the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The Executive Order also calls for a full review of any additional funding provided to the United Nations.

"There's great potential and based on the potential, we're going to continue our engagement, but they've got to come together," President Trump told reporters. "It's not being led well. They're not doing the job."

"Many of these conflicts that we are working on should be resolved, or at least we should have some help resolving them. It seems like we never get help. That should be the primary purpose of the United Nations," the US president said.

"From day one, United States support for the UN has saved countless lives and advanced global security," said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

"The UN Secretary-General looks forward to continuing his productive relationship with President Trump and the US government to strengthen this relationship in today's turbulent world."/ CNA
