Nuclear accident in Ukraine at risk/Expert: Russia could bring terrible consequences

The head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog has sounded the alarm about the continuing risk of nuclear accidents as a result of Russia's attacks on Ukraine's power grid.

Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), arrived in the Ukrainian capital Kiev on Tuesday and warned of dire consequences not only from direct strikes on power plants, but from strikes on substations and other infrastructure that could cause widespread outages.

"A nuclear accident could result from a direct attack on a power plant, but also from the disruption of the electricity supply."

Moscow has repeatedly bombed Ukraine's energy infrastructure, including substations, during its three-year occupation, although it has avoided direct strikes on Ukraine's nuclear power plants. /CNA
