NATO "quenched" Kosovo's hopes/ "I don't think we are

Boris Rugge, Assistant Secretary General of NATO, has said that he thinks that now is not the situation where we can talk about Kosovo's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance, NATO.

He stated that Kosovo is not yet moving towards membership in the Partnership for Peace.

In an interview for the Kosovar media, the official of the alliance emphasized that NATO has not given up its support for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue and that they are hopeful that this process will continue.

"I don't think we are currently in a situation where we can talk about membership. I believe we have arranged a new round of talks for next week between the EU's special representative for dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, and the chief negotiators of Kosovo and Serbia. The process has been going on for a long time already and I understand that there are frustrations regarding this, but our policies in NATO make us support the dialogue facilitated by the EU and we have not given up hope that the process can continue further. I would emphasize the fact that on Monday of this week we had the Berlin Process which was held in Berlin. One of the events was the advancement of the free trade agreement, now Kosovo sits at the CEFTA table, replacing UNMIK. This paves the way for an economic zone in the Western Balkans which is extremely important because none of the Western Balkan countries is big enough to exist on its own. You need access to markets from different routes. This is an example of how progress can be made. This is the way I think this process will continue", said Rugge.
