German authorities announced on Sunday that they had arrested a Libyan national who was allegedly planning to carry out a gun attack against the Israeli embassy in Berlin.

German police suspect he has ties to the extremist group Islamic State (IS).

Security forces and police arrested him on Saturday night in Bernau, a town near Berlin, and raided his home there, the federal prosecutor's office said in a statement.

The prosecutor's office said the suspect is a citizen of Libya and identified him only as Omar A.

"He intended to carry out a high-profile attack with firearms against the Israeli embassy in Berlin," the statement said.

During the planning, according to the announcement, "the accused exchanged data with an IS member through messages."

Security forces also searched the home of another person, who is considered a witness and not a suspect, the prosecutor's office said.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said German security authorities "acted in time to prevent possible plans to attack the Israeli embassy in Berlin".

"This shows that the protection of Jewish and Israeli institutions in our country is vital and extremely important to us," she added.

Israel's ambassador to Berlin, Ron Prosor, thanked the German security authorities "for guaranteeing the security of our embassy", the news agency "dpa" reported./ REL
