Concerns over reports that North Korea is sending troops to Ukraine in support

The involvement of regular North Korean troops to support the Russian offensive in Ukraine would be a serious escalation of the war, the foreign ministers of France and Ukraine said at a joint press conference in Kiev on Saturday.

This marked the first visit to Ukraine by French Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, since taking office in September. He is expected to visit the eastern part of the country on Sunday, where France will finance two new centers for the protection of children affected by the war.

On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy accused North Korea of ??preparing to send 10,000 troops to help Moscow in its war against Ukraine. But NATO chief Mark Rutte said that so far there was no evidence of Pyongyang's presence in Ukraine.

"Such a development would be something serious and would push the conflict to a new stage, escalating it," Mr. Barrot said in Kiev, adding that such a move would also be a signal that Moscow is encountered difficulties in the war.

His Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, said that the risk of escalation from this decision was "great".

"This is a great threat for a further escalation of Russian aggression against Ukraine. There is a great danger that it will go beyond the level presented or its current limits."

Earlier this week, Mr Zelenskiy unveiled the 'victory plan' which he said would enable Ukraine to end the war no later than next year. The first step of this plan would be the unconditional membership of Ukraine in NATO.

France's foreign minister said Paris was open to the idea of ??an immediate invitation for Ukraine to join, but said talks would continue on the topic with allies.

"As far as Ukraine's invitation is concerned, we are open to it and it is a discussion we are having with our partners", said Mr. Barrot./ Voa
