NATO begins largest military exercise in decades

NATO on Wednesday began its biggest military exercise since the Cold War era, and a US warship left the United States to cross the Atlantic towards alliance territory in Europe.

The Western military alliance has said that around 90,000 forces will take part in the months-long exercise called "Steadfast Defender 2024". The training operation is intended to test NATO's defenses as Russia's war in Ukraine continues.

"The alliance will demonstrate its ability to strengthen the Euro-Atlantic arena through the transatlantic movement of forces from North America," said General Christopher Cavoli, NATO's supreme commander in Europe.

"Steadfast Defender 2024 will be a clear demonstration of our unity, strength and determination to defend each other, our values ??and the rules-based international order," said General Cavoli.

The exercise is designed as a simulation of the 31-nation alliance's response to an attack by a rival country, such as Russia.

The exercise will consist of a series of smaller maneuvers that will stretch from North America to NATO's eastern flank near the border with Russia.

About 50 warships, 80 aircraft and over 1,100 ground combat vehicles are expected to take part.

This is the largest exercise since 1988 when the "Reforger" exercise was held during the Cold War. It comes at a time when NATO has transformed its defenses since Russia launched its attack on Ukraine in 2022.

The alliance has sent thousands of military forces to its eastern flank and prepared the most extensive plans since the fall of the Soviet Union to defend against a Russian attack.
