NATO condemns Iran's targeting of Turkey

NATO has condemned Iran's targeting of Turkey, following reports that a missile launched from Iran and heading towards Turkish airspace was shot down by NATO air defense systems.

NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart said the Alliance stands by its allies as Iran continues its attacks across the region.

"We condemn Iran's targeting of Turkey. NATO stands strong with all allies, including Turkey, as Iran continues its indiscriminate attacks across the region. Our deterrent and defensive posture remains strong in all areas, including air and missile defense," Hart said. 

Turkey's Ministry of National Defense (MSB) announced earlier that a ballistic missile launched from Iran was neutralized by NATO air and missile defense systems before it entered Turkish airspace.

According to the official statement, the missile had initially passed over the airspace of Iraq and Syria and was heading towards Turkey. However, it was intercepted and destroyed in the air by defense elements deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The incident comes at a time of high tensions in the region, while Turkey, as a NATO member, relies on the alliance's common air defense architecture to ensure national security. /CNA
