Trump threatened Spain with trade disruption/ EC: We will act to protect EU

The European Commission has said it is ready to defend EU interests after US President Donald Trump threatened to cut off trade with Spain. Trump's threats came after Spain refused to allow the US to use its bases to attack Iran.

"We stand in full solidarity with all member states and all their citizens and, through our common commercial policy, we stand ready to act if necessary to protect the EU's interests," said commission spokesman Olof Gill in a statement issued in response to Trump's threats, Le Monde reports.

In his statement, Gill said that the EU and the United States reached a major trade agreement last year and said that the European Commission expects the United States to fully fulfill the commitments undertaken as part of the agreement.

"We will continue to support stable, predictable and mutually beneficial transatlantic trading relationships for the good of all. Preserving this relationship, especially at a time of global disruption, is more important than ever and clearly in the interest of both sides ," he said.

Trump sharply attacked the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Tuesday, criticizing its refusal to grant use of the Rota naval base and the Moron air base, as well as its refusal to join NATO allies in a pledge to increase defense spending.

"We will cut off all trade with Spain. We don't want to have anything to do with Spain ," Trump said.

Sanchez's leftist government has angered Washington with a number of other policies, including staunch opposition to Israel's war in Gaza and a military operation to kidnap and detain Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. /CNA
