US administration says Iran had enriched uranium for 11 bombs

Senior Trump administration officials say Iran possessed "11 bombs' worth" of enriched uranium at the start of the war and could have converted it into weapons-grade nuclear material in just a week.

Speaking to reporters in a call on Tuesday, officials said Iran's stockpile consisted of 10,000 kg of enriched uranium, of which approximately 460 kg was enriched to 60%.

This material could have been enriched to the 90% threshold, which is generally considered weapons-grade, within a week to ten days, an official says.

Officials say Iran had also tested weapons “cases” and “detonators,” which U.S. officials say were evidence that Tehran would have been able to quickly obtain weapons-grade uranium and convert it into a weapon that would be used against adversaries. The update provides the most detailed account of the administration’s assessment of Iran’s nuclear program since the start of the war.

This comes at a time when US President Donald Trump and other senior administration officials argue that the war was necessary to eliminate Iran's ability to develop nuclear weapons.

Trump has repeatedly said that US strikes on Iran last year destroyed the country's nuclear program. But there is still enriched nuclear material in all three countries, a senior administration official said./ CNA, translated by BBC
