Attacks in the Middle East/ UNESCO: Major damage to cultural monuments in Iran

UNESCO today expressed deep concern over the security and protection of important cultural heritage sites in the Middle East, which have been embroiled in a chaotic situation due to attacks in the region for days.

The main case mentioned is the Golestan Palace in Tehran, the ruins of which were damaged by the airstrike in the area around Arg Squares, according to Iranian news agencies.

UNESCO confirms that the windows, doors and mirrors of this historic complex are damaged.

The building is one of the oldest and most historically significant monuments in the Iranian capital.

UNESCO emphasizes that cultural heritage is protected under international law, particularly under the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, and the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. /CNA
