Trump warns of trade disruption with Spain/ Sanchez: US to respect agreements

US President Donald Trump declared on Tuesday evening that the United States would cut off all trade with Spain after the European country refused to allow the US military to use its bases for missions related to the attacks on Iran.

During a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Trump said he has asked US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to cut off all trade relations with Spain.

"Spain has been terrible. We're going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don't want anything to do with Spain ," Trump told reporters.

Following Trump's warnings, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also reacted. In a statement released on Wednesday, Spain demanded that the US comply with international law and trade agreements with the EU. The Spanish government stressed that it is a key member of NATO and an exporting power of the EU.

"Spain respects its commitments and is a reliable trading partner for 195 countries in the world, including the United States, with which we maintain a historic and mutually beneficial commercial relationship. If the US government wants to review it, it must do so while respecting the autonomy of private companies, international legality and bilateral agreements between the European Union and the United States," the government said in a statement published by the prime minister's office.

Trump's warnings came after the US moved 15 aircraft, including refueling tankers, from the Rota and Moron military bases in southern Spain after the country's leadership said it would not allow them to be used to attack Iran.

Relations between the United States and Spain have deteriorated after Madrid criticized the coordinated US-Israeli attack on Iran, calling it an attempt to destabilize the Middle East. / CNA
