Macron: Blocking the Strait of Hormuz is no justification for lifting sanctions on Russia

French President Emmanuel Macron said the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz does not justify lifting sanctions against Russia. Macron added that the situation in Iran should not reduce the focus on Ukraine, support for Ukraine or clarity about sanctions against Russia. The US imposed sanctions on Russian oil after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, forcing buyers to look for alternatives.

These sanctions were temporarily eased by the US government to allow India to purchase Russian oil that is currently stranded at sea, amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

Macron told leaders during today's G7 conference that it is important to coordinate in order to ensure that freedom of navigation is restored in the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible./ CNA
