Three ships hit near Strait of Hormuz

At least three ships were hit in and around the "vital" oil route of the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, according to a British maritime monitoring group, as the war in the Middle East blocks one of the main channels for global oil trade.

Iran appeared to claim responsibility for at least one of the attacks. Alireza Tangsiri, the naval commander in Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard Corps, named one of the ships that was hit, the Mayuree Naree, in a social media post, saying it had "ignored warnings" from Iran and "ended up being captured."

A Japanese-flagged container ship called One Majesty was left with a 10cm hole after an attack about 47km north of the United Arab Emirates port city of Ras Al Khaimah, and is now heading for safe harbour.

The second ship, a Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship called the Star Gwyneth, has reported that its crew is all safe and sound after a strike from an unknown source damaged the ship's hull about 92km north of Dubai.
