Attacks on Iranian oil depots/WHO warns of "black rain" in Tehran:

The World Health Organization has warned that "black rain" and toxic compounds in the air in Iran following attacks on oil facilities could cause respiratory problems and has agreed with Iranian authorities' recommendations that citizens stay indoors.

The United Nations health agency, which has offices in Iran and works with authorities on health emergencies, said it had received numerous reports of acid rain this week.

Tehran was engulfed in black smoke on Monday after a refinery was bombed, an escalation of attacks against Iran's domestic energy reserves as part of the US-Israeli military campaign.

"Black rain and the acid rain that falls with it pose a risk to the population, especially to the respiratory system ," WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier said during a press conference in Geneva, adding that Iran is advising citizens not to go outside.

Asked if the WHO supports these recommendations, the official said: “Considering what is at stake now, oil facilities, refineries that have been hit causing fires and raising serious concerns about air quality, then it is definitely a good idea.”

According to him, the bombings caused the massive release of toxic hydrocarbons, sulfur oxides and nitrogen compounds into the air. Scientists have said that inhaling or touching the smoke or particles can cause headaches, skin or eye irritation and difficulty breathing. According to him, long-term exposure to some compounds increases the risk of certain cancers. /CNA
