Analysis: The longer this war continues, the better it gets for Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin is a master at turning events to his advantage, and the war in the Middle East is no different.

At first, this conflict brought problems to Russia. A key regional ally that was about to fall. But the longer this war continues, the better it becomes for Moscow.

The economic benefits are clear, higher oil prices, increased demand for Russian energy, and possible easing of US sanctions.

Last week, the Trump administration granted a temporary exemption for India from buying Russian crude oil to ease global supply problems. Following his phone call with Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering taking it a step further.

In a statement about the phone call between the two leaders, the Kremlin said that sanctions relief was not discussed, but did not deny that it was mentioned.

It is not difficult to imagine Putin declaring: "If you want to calm the markets, Russian oil is your way out."

In the long term, the Russian president also seems to be aiming for geopolitical gains, positioning himself as a mediator. According to the Kremlin, Putin proposed several ideas aimed at a quick political and diplomatic end to the conflict.

To be fair, Moscow is in a unique position to do this. It has strong ties to Iran and good relations with the other Gulf states affected, not to mention Israel.

If Putin can convince Tehran to stop its attacks and prevent further escalation of the conflict, it would not only protect Russia's interests but also do President Donald Trump a favor.

This, in turn, could create leverage for Putin when it comes to dealing with the US regarding his conflict in Ukraine.

The topic of Ukraine was mentioned in the call, and again you can imagine Putin's words: "If I help you with Iran, then you help me too, by putting more pressure on Kiev ." /Taken from Sky News
