Why Iran's Kharg Island Hasn't Been Bombed Yet

Kharg is a strategically important Iranian island that has not yet been attacked by the US and Israel, even though they have struck thousands of targets in Iran during the war.

This small island in the Persian Gulf is Iran's main oil export hub. About 90% of Iran's oil exports pass through this island. Pipelines from the central and western parts of the country end there.

Normally, the island exports 1.3–1.6 million barrels of oil per day, while Iran increased production to 3 million barrels per day before the war began.

Experts warn that if the island is attacked, the price of oil could rise from around $120 to $150 per barrel and the global energy supply would be shaken.

For this reason, the US and Israel have so far avoided striking Iran's oil infrastructure, because it would directly affect the global economy.

An attack on the island could provoke strong reactions from Iran, for example, retaliatory attacks on energy infrastructure in the region or the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil shipping routes.

Some analysts say that the destruction of this island would damage Iran's economy so much that it would also destroy the economic basis of a future Iranian government, making it more difficult to stabilize the country after the war./CNA
