Lawmakers react to Supreme Court ruling

Leading Democrats on Capitol Hill have sharply criticized the Supreme Court's decision to limit the power of judges to block President Donald Trump's orders across the country.

The U.S. House Minority Leader, Hakeem Jeffries, said the court "unwisely limited the ability of federal district courts to issue injunctions across the country. However, the legal battle to protect the right to birthright citizenship is still ongoing. Every child born in the United States is an American citizen. We will not rest until this constitutional right is fully and unequivocally protected."

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer described the decision as "an unprecedented and terrifying step toward authoritarianism, a grave danger to our democracy."

"By weakening the power of district courts to check the presidency, the Court is not protecting the Constitution - it is distorting it," he added.

Republican leaders have welcomed the decision.

"The Supreme Court made it clear that these rogue and politically motivated judges have overstepped their authority, and this blatantly political practice must end," said House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Vice President JD Vance said: "A major decision by the Supreme Court, ending the ridiculous process of restraining orders across the country. Under our system, everyone must follow the law - including judges!"/ CNA
