EU extends existing sanctions against Russia, no new ones

The EU summit in Brussels has ended, but the heads of state and government did not agree on everything: Sanctions against Russia were not tightened, but they were extended. It is learned from the negotiating circles at the EU summit on Thursday evening (26.06.2025) in Brussels that the heads of state and government of the member states approved the extension of the sanctions package against Russia for another six months.

After the EU summit and the previous NATO meeting, Chancellor Merz made a mixed assessment of support for Ukraine. "I didn't expect more, I feared less," he said in Brussels, referring to the NATO summit. "There could have been a bigger disagreement, including between Trump and Zelensky, but that didn't happen."

EU countries must unanimously approve their sanctions every six months. The EU has so far adopted 17 packages of sanctions against Moscow against the backdrop of Russia's aggressive war in Ukraine. Previously, Hungary's right-wing conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orban had repeatedly threatened boycotts.

Disagreements during the summit
Disagreements between the heads of state and government of the member states also emerged at Thursday's meeting. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico initially expressed reservations about the new package of sanctions against Russia. Slovakia cannot continue to adopt sanctions for a long time, as long as Slovakia's reservations for gas supplies after 2027 are not eliminated. Slovakia continues to receive gas from Russia. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban again spoke out against Ukraine's membership in the EU.

The summit also discussed the state of European and global trade, ahead of the threat of US tariffs. According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the EU has received the new US proposal for a trade deal. However, a decision has not yet been made. "All options are still on the table," she said. /DW
