EU leaders pledge to provide 'security commitments' to Ukraine

European Union leaders decided in the early hours of Friday morning to extend their pledge to support Ukraine as much as possible, agreeing to give the war-torn country future security commitments.

"The European Union and its Member States are ready to contribute, together with partners, to future security commitments to Ukraine, which will help Ukraine defend itself in the long term, deter acts of aggression and resist attempts destabilizing," EU heads of state agreed at the conclusions of the two-day European Council summit.

"These commitments will be made in full respect of the security and defense policy of some member states and taking into account the security and defense interests of all member states," they added.

The aim, an EU official told Euroenia, is to replace the bloc's aid approach to Ukraine with long-term financial, humanitarian and military assistance to help it meet its needs over the coming years, so that not only survive the war and arrive at the negotiating table with Russia in a strong position, but also integrate further into the EU and NATO to facilitate membership.

It comes just two weeks before leaders from NATO's 31 members gather in the Lithuanian capital to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, Ukraine's membership and the ongoing transformation of the military alliance.

"It's actually commendable that the EU is now thinking about this. I think it's clearly a move designed to pre-empt the NATO summit," said Bruno Lété, senior security and defense fellow at the German Marshall Fund. of the United States.

"I think in an ideal world, Ukraine is asking for anything resembling Article 5 of NATO. Ukraine wants strong military guarantees, that's the ultimate goal. But I think Ukraine is also realistic enough to understand that the West might is not prepared to go that far just yet.

"So I think what Ukraine would really require is at least the provision of a steady flow of arms, the provision of exchange of advanced technology and, of course, a lot of political guarantees that it can be further integrated towards the EU and NATO -s," he added./ CNA
